Runway Top Ten
Top off your holiday with a view to kill – just don’t take the stairs
Words by Dominique Afacan
one: Gravity Bar
at The Guinness Storehouse
DUBLIN
www.guinness-storehouse.com Fans of the black stuff will love this building, modelled on a giant pint glass. Visitors to the Storehouse can learn about the brewing process, admire advertising memorabilia and take part in an interactive exhibit to monitor drinking habits. The high point is at the Gravity Bar, where each visitor gets a complimentary pint of Guinness – and a 360-degree view over Dublin.
two: U Prince
PRAGUE
www.hoteluprince.cz This 12th-century hotel in the Old Town Square is one of the city’s grandest, filled with beautiful antiques and a fantastic rooftop terrace. Visitors can eat and drink up here, as well as gaze out at the views of the Old Town and the castle.
three:
Great John Street Hotel
MANCHESTER
www.greatjohnstreet.co.uk This converted school house is boutique hotel at its best – and the rooftop terrace is no exception. Here you can indulge in a cocktail or work out in the gym. Fans of UK soap Coronation Street will even be able to spy over the cobbles of their favourite TV road. A hot tub and a hammock add the finishing touches.
four:
Portrait Suites
ROME
www.lungarnohotels.com Travellers with a penchant for luxury will flock to this recently opened collection of suites on Rome’s Via Condotti. The suites, located above the Ferragamo store (they are also operated by the Ferragamo family) are designed to feel like luxurious pied à terres in the city. The highlight is the rooftop terrace, where guests can sip cocktails or enjoy breakfast as they gaze out over the Spanish Steps.
?ve:
Cine Paris
ATHENS
22 Kydatheneon Street, Plaka (+30 210 322 2071) Open-air cinema is a big deal in Athens – and the Cine Paris is one of the most popular in the city. Climb up to the roof to watch a film; if it gets boring, you can always indulge in a spot of star-gazing.
six:
Kensington Roof Gardens
LONDON
www.roofgardens.com This popular nightclub in London’s moneyed South Ken offers an added extra: a huge roof garden. Which comes as a relief when you realise how busy it’s going to get back inside. The garden comes complete with two flamingos, Bill and Ben, along with a fishpond and regular barbecues.
seven:
Hotel Everland
PARIS
www.everland.ch Developed as part of a Swiss exhibition in 2002, this hotel is essentially an artwork that guests become a part of. Its current resting place, atop the Palais de Tokyo, overlooking the Eiffel Tower is spectacular. The ‘hotel’ consists of one room with a king-size bed, bathroom and lounge. And don’t panic as breakfast is delivered right to the door.
eight:
La Pedrera
BARCELONA
www.lapedreraeducacio.org One of Gaudi’s many rippling masterpieces, La Pedrera has a fantastic rooftop, which the public can visit. It makes a nice alternative to the perpetually packed Sagrada Familia, too. Inside there are flats and offices for some lucky folk, but up on the roof you can admire eerie gargoyles and bizarre chimneys, along with mountains and sea further afield.
nine:
The Penthouse Bar
at Reina Victoria Hotel
MADRID
www.mebymelia.com Rande Gerber has created one of Madrid’s most happening hotspots in the ME Madrid, overlooking the Plaza Santa Ana. Expect celebrities galore and a cool collection of the city’s A-listers lounging on the cushioned beds and sipping designer cocktails.
ten:
Pangaea
MARBELLA
www.pangaeauk.com The nightclub that began in New York in 2001 has since expanded to London, Miami and Marbella. The stunning Marbella venue has a rooftop terrace and an al fresco bar, so you can gaze out over the Med as you dance.
