Czech Golf
Locals are going crazy for golf in the Czech Republic – and Prague is the first stop for those looking to tee off in a different town

PHOTO: © CORBISThese days everyone in the Czech Republic seems to be shouting ‘fore!’ And with 72 golf courses to choose from in some of the most beautiful locations in Europe, it’s no surprise. With a round of golf at some of the country’s best clubs rarely costing more than €30 and a local beer less than €1 – cheaper than a coffee – it’s a fraction of the cost of playing elsewhere.
For travellers on a short stop to Prague, the Karlstejn (www.karlstejn-golf.cz) and Konopište (www.gcko.cz) courses are a must – both within a 25-mile trip from the city centre. The scenery around these clubs is like something Walt Disney dreamt up – fairytale castles, crystal-clear lakes and rocky hillsides. And make no mistake, these are tough courses. Score well on these and a drink in the friendly 19th hole at both clubs comes well earned.
Plenty of hotels these days are bolting on spa and wellness centres to pamper their guests, but spa towns with relaxing thermal springs have been part of the Czech way of life for generations. And near every spa in Prague you’ll find a top-class golf course.
Two of the most famous Czech golf clubs are both set near gorgeous old spa towns. Royal Mariánské Lázne (www.golfml.cz) received its ultimate accolade in 2003 when Queen Elizabeth II, great-granddaughter of the club’s first member King Edward VII, bestowed the Royal prefix on the club. Check in at the luxurious Hotel Esplanade (www.ghotw.com) in the heart of Prague – and you’ll be able to rest off your round in romantic surroundings.
The other grand old lady of Czech golf – another must-play venue – is nearby and even older. Karlovy Vary (www.golfresort. cz) dates back to 1904 when it opened among the wooded hillsides overlooking the River Tepla. The club fell into sorry decay after World War II but now is back to its warm and welcoming best.

Jack NicklausFew locations in European golf are as enjoyable as this one. After a round, take a seat on the clubhouse terrace overlooking the first three holes and the 18th and sip on a Pilsner Urquell beer, inhaling the pine-scented air. For those feeling a bit peckish after their exertions, there is a telephone by the 18th tee – the idea is to call the restaurant so your meal will be ready and waiting by the time you have finished putting out at the last.
Check into the Grand Hotel Pupp (www.pupp.cz) right on the doorstep of the Karlovy Vara golf course – and you’ll be able to wind down in the spa after a long day of golf.
Players looking for a course with more of an American feel should head for the Gary Player-designed Astoria golf resort (www.astoria-golf. cz), also located in the Tepla Valley. Here water hazards loom large on the lush fairways that have already played host to the European junior golf championship, despite only opening in 2001. Stay at the small Royal Golf Hotel (www.royalgolf.cz), a stunning chateau offering 64 beds and some sumptuous suites.
One week of golfing in the Czech republic and you’ll not even scratch the surface of first-class courses and places to stay. As golf legend Jack Nicklaus said recently, ‘The Czech Republic is one of the eastern European countries where golf and golf-course design is surging. It is certain to produce some top-flight players of its own very soon.’ So while the fairways are still quiet, the green fees still cheap and the beer still delicious, pack those clubs and head for Prague.
