TASTE FOR TREND
Angel Adoree has just opened the TShirt Patisserie on London’s Brick Lane. She also holds vintage shopping parties, currently taking the fashion world by storm
THE FASHION:
Personalised T-shirts, €30
Tell us about the concept behind the TShirt Patisserie. The T-shirts all come from American Apparel. People choose the style they want, add a topping of words or images and have it baked while they wait. The customised tees come packaged in a beautiful patisserie box with a sweet treat inside! It’s a simple concept, but it has really taken off.
What gave you the idea? I just wanted to do something really bespoke – something people could wear that was individual. Also, I like cakes!
And how did your vintage parties come about? I’ve been thrifting since I was 13! I used to archive all my clothes – my mum thought I was crazy. I got to 25 and thought it was a good idea to start selling all the stuff I had accumulated. I still thrift shop every week – I get a thrill from knowing that some of my favourite garments cost 25p.
So what happens at the parties? The parties are at my house – an old school in Bethnal Green, East London. Everywhere you look there are clothes and shoes! Each party has 25-30 guests, and it’s an invite-only event – I give visitors wine and some home-cooked food and put on old jazz while they shop.
Do you ever shop on the high street? Yes, I think it’s great to mix and match. I go into Primark and Topshop. But I do find that my old clothes are much better made. I think that’s why lots of women have hang-ups about their figures nowadays – all they need is some decent tailoring!
What’s the most expensive piece of clothing you’ve ever bought? It was a Donna Karan catwalk item, a 1930s-style polka dot dress that set me back nearly £1000! But it was for my best friend’s wedding and I knew it was the perfect look.
Who’s your favourite designer? I love Vivienne Westwood and Chanel. I also love Susie Coulthard, a local designer, who makes amazing dresses [pictured on Angel, left].
Where do you most like to hang out in London? As an avid jazz fan, I would have to say the Jazz Cafe or Plastic People, which hosts jazz nights the second and last Sunday every month.
Is your name really Angel Adoree? Of course not! It’s Angela Newman.
